Launched for 1997, Porsches new mid-engine Boxster recalled the legendary 718 RS60 Spyder of racing fame. Marking a return to Porsches roots, the Boxster named after its liquid-cooled boxer-type engine and sleek roadster body, began as a design proposal by Grant Larson and Pinky Lai that won an internal competition at Porsche. Debuted as the Boxster Concept at the January 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and finalized for production by March 1993, the Boxster was assigned the internal Typ 986 designation. Featuring several design cues similar to those of the upcoming new 996-generation 911, the Boxster debuted ahead of the senior Porsche, with pilot-car production starting in late 1995 and actual production commencing mid-1996. The uprated Boxster S arrived by 1999 and appealed to hard-core driving fans with its slightly revised front bodywork, plus uprated brakes and chassis components, Plus a more aggressive, larger-displacement 3.2-liter engine factory-rated at 258 horsepower. Performance figures for the S included quicker acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds and a higher top speed of 164 mph was now available.
While the Boxster was normally built in Finland, this 2003 Porsche Boxster S is a specially-ordered car, built in Porsches hallowed Stuttgart factory under the companys bespoke Exclusive Program. Featuring special-order Arctic Silver Metallic paint (825) over Boxster Red Special leather upholstery ($2,430), this Boxster S features 12 extra-cost factory options in all that raised the cars retail price by $10,205 when new. Blessed with a clean history, the Boxster S was first located in Alabama and subsequently relocated to Illinois, with just three owners and 43,184 miles from new. Clearly well-maintained throughout, this highly optioned Boxster S comes with a Porsche Vehicle Options Detail sheet, confirming its high specification. Among its many highly desirable features are 18-inch Turbo Look II wheels ($1,435), a Bose audio system with Windstop ($1,860), the Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package ($1,090), heated seats ($410), a painted body-color roll bar ($535), and more. A recent and documented major service was performed at the cost of $5,700, including replacement of the IMS bearing and clutch and a complete fluid service.
