Debuted in production-ready form at the 2002 New York International Auto Show, the Honda Element was specifically developed for the North American market. Design was rooted in the Model X concept developed by Honda engineers in 1998 and first shown at the 2001 North American international auto show in Detroit. Based on the CR-V with distinctively boxy styling, the Element was produced 2003-11 and aimed at youthful, adventure-seeking buyers with a spacious interior equipped with an easy-to-clean plastic-covered floor. Innovative body design allowed bi-opening doors affording uncanny ease of access and plenty of room for sporting equipment and luggage. Ample power 166 HP and 150 lb-ft of torque was delivered by Hondas 4-cylinder, 2.4-liter K engine featuring I-VTEC. A choice of front-drive or optional Real Time 4-wheel drive was available.
