Following the rare, Europe-only Z1 of the early '90sthe first BMW Roadster since the glamorous 507 of the late '60sthe Z3 Roadster debuted at the January 1996 North American Auto Show in Detroit. Heightening the excitement for BMW fans was a cameo in the 1995 James Bond epic
"GoldenEye," in which a blue Z3 was piloted by 007 in Cuba.
Mechanicals of the Z3 were sourced from BMW's 3-Series, including MacPherson strut front suspension based on the E36 design and the trailing-arm rear suspension of the E30. Power teams initially included a 1.9-liter 4-cylinder engine, with a 2.8-liter straight six added in 1997, and the M roadster with 3.2-liter power. By 1999, the 4-cylinder mill was replaced by a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline six, uprated in 2001 to 184 horsepower. In addition to its handsome looks and wonderful all-around driving experience, the Z3 also made history as the first BMW model that was never built in Germany, with all Z3s produced in South Carolina from 1996 to 2002 by BMW Spartanburg.
This outstanding 2001 BMW Z3 Roadster is an exceptionally well-maintained and highly desirable example throughout with just 40,200 miles at the time of writing and listing. Handsomely finished in extra-cost optional Siena Red Metallic paint ($475) with a Black power soft top and Black Classic Leather interior ($1,150), this collector-grade Z3 features 8 factory options costing $4,650 when new. Among them are the Sport Package consisting of 16" cross-spoke wheels and sport seats ($600), aluminum-look interior trim ($300), the power top mechanism ($750), heated front seats ((500), and the Harmon-Kardon sound system ($675). The factory BMW CD radio has been upgraded to a later-model Kenwood head unit. Ample power is delivered by the 2.5L DOHC 24-valve BMW inline 6-cylinder engine, paired with a desirable 5-speed manual transmission and harnessed by power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Documents include the clean Carfax report, window sticker, and a selection of service records. Freshly serviced and detailed, this exceptionally well-presented, low-mileage 2001 BMW Z3 is ready to collect, drive, and enjoy as desired.
