Introduced at Geneva in 1989 and released for sale as a 1990 model, the new fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz SL was the long-awaited replacement for the successful R107 SL models of 1971-89. Internally coded R129 and riding a 99-inch wheelbase, the new SL featured handsomely chiseled bodylines, exceptional all-around performance, and industry-leading safety features including a hidden roll bar that automatically deployed in the event of an impending rollover. First available as the 300 SL and 500 SL with 3.0L 6-cylinder and 5.0L V-8 power, the R129 remains one of the finest Grand Touring Mercedes-Benz models ever produced. A model-name change from 1994 onward resulted in the SL500 designation. Fast, solidly built, and renowned for quality standards, the R129 SL line was an immediate hit with buyers, particularly in America, and was produced until 2002.
