When Porsche introduced the new 993-series 911 models for 1995-98, they were historically important as the final air-cooled 911 generation. Advertised by Porsche as having 85 percent new content compared with its 964-series predecessors, the 993 featured a stiffer body, all new rear suspension design, updated interior, bigger brakes with enhanced ABS and wider wheels. A more powerful 3.6-liter engine delivered 272 HP for the Carrera 2 in basic form 25 more than before with a new maintenance-free hydraulic valvetrain and cutting-edge performance technologies including the new VarioRam intake system with variable-length runners. A new six-speed manual gearbox allowed drivers to fully exploit the engines wider power band to unlock greater performance, with road testers clocking 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.7 seconds, the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 104 mph and a 162-mph top speed.
