Known to hard-core Porsche fans as Type 951, the 944-based Turbo debuted for 1985 and drastically upped performance with nearly 60 additional horsepower on tap from the silky smooth 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Clutch and gearbox upgrades handled the extra power and other upgrades applied to the 944 Turbo included bigger anti-roll bars, 4-piston brake calipers, a smoother front end and bigger rear spoiler. Methodically developed and improved, power output was raised to 250 horsepower with the Turbo S for 1988 and for 1989-91 on the 944 Turbo. Today, these cars were, and remain, massive performers with thrilling acceleration, nimble handling, anchor-like 4-piston disc ventilated disc brakes, and a factory-advertised top speed of 162 mph. Production was relatively low for the 944 Turbo and its variants, with just 1,385 exported the United States for the 1989 model year.
