In 1971, Mercedes-Benz introduced the all-new Type R107 350SL as the replacement for its long-running 230/350/280SL sporting convertible models. Somewhat larger and more rounded than its predecessors, the new SL was based upon a steel unibody structure and featured a more luxuriously appointed interior. Powered by a 5.6-liter V-8 developing 227 rated horsepower and 279 pounds-feet of torque, the 560SL was the ultimate expression, available from 1985 through 1989.
