As one of the final expressions of Bill Mitchells tenure as head of GM Styling, a position he held since he was Harley Earls handpicked successor in 1958, the Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado remains a true landmark of modern automobile design. Long, low, plush, and powerful, the Eldorado stood firmly as the pinnacle of American motoring during the 1970s, confirmed by the Cadillacs use as the official Indianapolis 500 Pace Car by 1973. Based on a commanding 126.3-inch wheelbase and continuing with front-wheel drive, the basic styling theme of the final big Eldorado debuted for 1971 and continued through 1978 with selective facelifts for 1973 and 1975. Strong and rising sales during the early 1970s were met with Eldorado production expanded at the Detroit, Michigan and Linden, New Jersey GM assembly plants.
