Introduced for sale mid-way through the 1970 model year due to an extended strike at the Norwood, Ohio Assembly Plant, General Motors' second-generation F-Body Pontiac Firebird was offered only as a sleek fastback coupe featuring handsome, European-influenced styling cues. For the new Firebird's sophomore 1971 model year, GM stylists wisely left the car's outstanding styling intact and unchanged. Firebird models ranged from the base Firebird to the luxurious and sophisticated Esprit and GT-style Formula 400 and racy Trans Am. In addition to its premium-level exterior trimmings and passenger amenities, the Esprit was powered by Pontiac's 350 CI V-8 engine, in 2-barrel tune with a still-healthy 250 horsepower on tap.
As the vehicle of choice for private eye Jim Rockford, as masterfully portrayed by James Garner in NBC-TV's iconic show,
The Rockford Files, the second-generation Pontiac Firebird Esprit matched his character's smooth and streetwise on-screen persona. According to the prior owner, this handsome and well-equipped 1971 Pontiac Firebird Esprit has been used for a
Rockford Files remake. Built at GM's Van Nuys, California assembly plant and offered with under 46k miles at the time of writing, this Esprit is highly attractive in its Body Tag-specified Code 67 Castilian Bronze paint, accented by a Black vinyl roof covering over a Trim Code 219 Black interior.
Power is delivered by Pontiac's proprietary 350 CI V-8 engine, factory-rated at 250 horsepower, paired with a console-shifted automatic transmission. Other highly desirable features and options include power brakes, power steering, dual exhaust, air conditioning, power windows, and a center console. Additional entertainment is provided by an upgraded, OEM-appearing modern radio featuring Bluetooth connectivity. Pontiac's handsome Rally II wheels mounting BF Goodrich radials provide the finishing touches.
In addition to an original 1971 Firebird owner's manual, this exceptionally well presented Esprit comes with a wealth of service records and a handwritten mileage log tracking mileage through the years. If you appreciate the second-generation Firebird in its many forms, this handsome Esprit from 1971 is sure to please.
