On October 6, 1966, a totally new kind of Cadillac hit dealer showrooms, marking the culmination of a succession of daring experimental design studies beginning with the GM XP-727 in 1962. Part of the top-level Fleetwood line, the new-for-1967 Eldorado featured razor-edged styling with a formal coupe layout and front-drive powertrain. An instant hit, the Eldorado attracted excited buyers who tolerated long waiting lists and snapped up every one of the 17,930 first-year examples produced. Predictably, the all-new Eldorado immediately attracted a great deal of media coverage and industry awards with its excellent fit and finish, plush interiors, and strong performance. A 429 CI V-8 engine, upsized to 472 CI and 375 horsepower for 1968, delivered 0-to 60 in 10 seconds and an illegal but exhilarating 130-mph top speed. With its innovative front-drive powertrain and crisp styling that continues to influence todays current crop of Cadillac models, the original Eldorado continues to make a dramatic automotive statement unlike any other car.
While production rose strongly to 24,528 for the Eldorados sophomore 1968 model year, few survivors remain in the well-preserved and attractive condition of this example. Attractively presented with one repaint in the factory-specified Normandy Blue over well-preserved Code 426 Dark Blue Deauville cloth upholstery with vinyl seat bolsters, this Eldorado exemplifies Cadillacs late-1960s design leadership. In addition to its sophisticated styling including hide-away headlamps, the Eldorado is very well equipped with features and options including air conditioning, AM/FM radio, a power-adjustable front seat, tilt-telescopic steering, power brakes (discs front), and power steering, and power windows. A recent test drive confirms this Eldorado delivers a great driving experience and it includes a full-size spare wheel/tire, roadside jack, and car cover. Freshly serviced, detailed, and ready to go, this handsome 1968 Cadillac Eldorado marks one of the finest automobile designs ever conceived and regardless of the era.
