Returning for 1967, Pontiacs wildly successful Le Mans-based GTO featured carefully updated styling and numerous functional updates underneath that gorgeous exterior. It also continued for the second model year as a unique Pontiac series. Engines were upsized for 67 to 400 CI with a 335-HP unit standard and 255-HP economy unit optional, plus the new 360-HP 400 HO (High Output) option. The top performance choice was the rare (751 built), new-for-1967 Ram Air mill equipped with special cylinder heads plus a special high-lift camshaft, high-flow exhaust manifolds, and functional Ram Air air cleaner assembly underneath a functional hood scoop. A choice of close-ratio 4-speed manual or Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmissions was available for Ram Air cars, with a heavy duty Safe-T-Track rear end delivering the power with a dragstrip-worthy 4.33:1 axle ratio. A fully integrated high-performance car with class, image, and the substance to back it all up, the GTO sparked competitors from virtually all American makes, yet outsold them all once again for 1967.
