JULY 1981 SUPER CHEVY MAGAZINE FEATURE CAR
When it debuted for 1967 model year, Chevrolet's Camaro created a sensation and grabbed significant market share away from archrival Ford's Mustang. Success on the track matched the excitement generated at dealer showrooms, including back-to-back SCCA Trans Am championships in 1968-69 and Super Stock drag racing wins, creating a performance legend that continues stronger than ever today. A big part of the Camaro's successful formula was its low base pricing and huge array of factory-available options, allowing buyers to specify a Camaro to their specific needs, ranging from economical grocery getters to fire-breathing supercars.
This top-of-the-line Camaro RS/SS 396 convertible is a true time capsule from those early days, remaining incredibly original with the exception of an expertly applied, bare-metal repaint in its Body Tag-correct Code R-1 Bolero Red paint. Built at the Van Nuys, California Chevrolet plant on March 10, 1967, the Camaro was equipped with a white power convertible top as part of its factory Code R-1 color combination. Code 797 Parchment interior trim included custom Strato bucket seats and WXL package included a tinted windshield, power windows, and fold-down rear seat. Option 2GR including the center console and rear seat speaker. The 3SL package brought RPO Z23 interior decor and RPO Z22 Rally Sport equipment. The 4N engine option brought the RPO L35 396/325HP big-block V-8 engine developing 415 lbs-ft of factory-rated torque. Code 5Y added the Deluxe seatbelts. All aforementioned options are confirmed by the Fisher body tag still affixed to the Camaro's cowl. Other features of this exceptionally well equipped Camaro include the Special Instrumentation package, power windows, power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes, dual exhaust, tilt steering column, a pushbutton AM/FM Multiplex radio, 14-inch steel wheels and RPO N96 mag-style wheel covers.
According to correspondence on file, the Camaro was special-ordered in February 1967 by Van Nuys resident Gordon Veralrud. Interestingly, while the vehicle was built on March 10, 1967 and delivered thereafter to Rancho Chevrolet in Reseda, California, the Camaro was only purchased by Mr. Veralrud on December 23, 1967. Subsequent owners were James King of Tarzana, California in 1978, Frank and Andrea Brown of Woodland Hills, California and latterly Los Lunas, New Mexico in 1991, Fred Koenig of Phoenix Arizona in 2002, Jim Webb of Sherman Oaks, California in 2003, George Lyons of Erie, Pennsylvania in 2019, and then the current owner in 2021. In addition to the aforementioned NCRS Shipping Data Report and correspondence, documentation for this Camaro is exceptional, including service records, the original warranty booklet and Protect-O-Plate, owner's manuals, a Chevrolet accessory brochure, convertible top operation manual and a copy of the July 1981 issue of
Super Chevy magazine depicting the Camaro on the cover and featuring it within a detailed article.
