Initially conceived as the "La Salle II," the Riviera was Buick's image and engineering leader from 1963 through 1993 and again from 1995 to 1999. Competing directly with Ford's Thunderbird in the personal luxury market, the GS-themed Riviera was a true "gentleman's muscle car," exemplified by the sleekly restyled 1966-67 models. Somewhat larger with a new 119-inch wheelbase chassis, the updated Riviera featured a lower, longer, wider presence with a new fastback roofline and cleaner profile with vent widows replaced by new flow-through ventilation.
