Upon introduction for the 1966 model year, the boldly styled Oldsmobile Toronado gained immediate fame as Americas first front-wheel drive automobile produced since the Cord 810/812 of 1936-37. Power was delivered by Oldsmobiles biggest V-8 engine, displacing 425 cubic inches and delivering 385 factory-rated horsepower for a high-speed, Grand Touring driving experience. In addition to the Toronados advanced FWD drivetrain, including a Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, the glamorous Toronado featured many standard features and options befitting its top-of-the-line status. Styling was, and remains unmistakable, with main Toronado design cues including a low and wide presence, blade-style front fenders, a long hood/short deck hardtop profile, pop-up headlamps, and Kamm-style rear treatment. An unqualified design and engineering
tour de force, the Toronado was named
Motor Trend magazines Car of the Year for 1966. The Toronado was also a strong seller that year, with 40,963 leaving Oldsmobile dealer showrooms.
