Initially envisioned as the "La Salle II", the Buick Riviera was a personal-luxury model based on the General Motors XP-715 concept car styled by Ned Nickles under the direction of GM design chief Bill Mitchell. Based on a shortened and narrowed Buick frame, the stylish Riviera featured smartly tailored bodylines including knife-edge design cues inspired by contemporary Rolls-Royce models. When Cadillac management wasn't interested, Buick took over the project, renamed it Riviera, and commenced production for 1963.

Powering the Riviera was Buick's famed "Nailhead" V-8 engine and mechanicals included massive Al-Fin drum brakes, quick-ratio power steering and sophisticated underpinnings, resulting in one of the best-handling and performing American luxury cars of the era. The Riviera was highly acclaimed for its handsome styling on both sides of the Atlantic and a strong seller during its first three production years as a highly desirable alternative to Ford's Thunderbird and Chrysler's 300. Changes for Riviera's sophomore year were limited, most noticeably with newly exposed quad headlamps.

A highly original and very well-maintained and presented example throughout, this 1964 Buick Riviera benefits handsomely from a high-quality repaint. Ample power is delivered by Buick's proprietary "Wildcat 465 Nailhead" V-8 engine, displacing 425 CI and producing 340 horsepower. Most importantly, the engine is factory-rated with very useful peak torque of 465 foot-pounds at just 2,800 rpm. Featuring generous and attractively patterned front bucket seats and an aircraft cockpit-style dash and console design, this Rivera is desirably equipped with recharged factory air conditioning and a retrofitted digital AM/FM CD stereo unit. Other highlights include excellent chrome and bright trim, plus attractive Buick road wheels mounting a set of new tires. Freshly inspected, serviced, and detailed, this 1964 Buick Riviera is an outstanding example of one of the most stylish and influential postwar American automobiles, with power and luxury to match.
