With the arrival of the MGA Roadster in 1955, MG's fiercely loyal buyers and marque enthusiasts were rewarded with a streamlined, modern body design and up-to-date B-series engine derived from the MG Magnette saloon. Before the official launch of the MGA, three aluminum-bodied prototype cars contested the 1955 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and were quite successful, finishing fifth and sixth in class. As a result, when the MGA was available to buyers, the car already possessed an international racing pedigree, helping ensure the modern new model's acceptance among MG traditionalists. The initial 1,500 cc engine specification was succeeded by an upsized 1,600 cc unit by 1959, featuring a useful power bump from 68 to 80 factory-rated horsepower and new Lockheed disc brakes up front. The 1622 cc Mk II arrived in 1961 and was even more potent with 93 factory-rated horsepower, marking the final MGA variant.
Formerly part of a noted collection, this 1962 MGA Mk II Coupe is understood to be one of as few as 25 examples produced. According to the British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate on file, this MGA is an original left-hand drive, North American Export model assembled early in March 1962 and dispatched to the USA on March 12, 1962. Factory-fitted equipment included disc-style wheels, windscreen washers, a heater and a speedometer calibrated in MPH. Continuing to benefit from a total rotisserie restoration completed by Florida marque experts under a previous owner during the 2000s, this rare MGA maintains its factory-specified Old English White paint color and Red leather color combination. The MGA also maintains its proper drivetrain, comprising the twin-carbureted 1,622 cc inline 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual gearbox. In addition to the corresponding BMIHT Certificate, this MGA has been listed in the North American MGA Register since September 1977.
Long renowned for its sporty driving experience and startling performance, the MGA remains a quintessential postwar British sports car. This exceptionally rare and well-restored and presented example offers the opportunity to collect, show, and enjoy a true legend. Contact us today to experience it first-hand and make it yours!
