In mid-1961, Oldsmobile introduced the Starfire, an exciting new high-style, full-size convertible based on the Super Eighty-Eight and named after the powerful Lockheed F-94 Starfire interceptor. Celebrating the GM Division's rich performance heritage, the Starfire was aimed at the personal luxury market dominated for several years by Ford's Thunderbird. In addition to special and tasteful exterior trim, the Starfire featured luxurious Ninety-Eight-level interiors equipped with leather upholstery, power front bucket seats and a center console housing a tachometer and the shift lever for the 4-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission, plus an AM radio.
Renowned for its outstanding highway performance and road manners, the Starfire was exclusively powered by Oldsmobile's most powerful engine, displacing 394 CI and developing 330 BHP. Priced from nearly $5,000 new, 7,800 of these premium road cars were produced for the inaugural 1961 model year. Today, top-quality examples such as this 1961 Starfire provide an ideal and very stylish alternative to the far more common Fords and Chevrolets of the era, especially considering their outstanding performance, upscale prestige and rarity.
Clearly benefiting from a well preserved restoration, this first-year Starfire sports a factory-correct Garnet Mist Metallic paint finish with a Red interior and matching soft top. Features and amenities are many, as listed above, plus rare factory air conditioning a $378 option when new. A new dual exhaust system is freshly installed. Accompanying items include a spare tire and roadside jack, plus a selection of invoices spanning 2010 to 2019, documenting routine maintenance and such items as the replacement of weatherstripping. Freshly serviced and detailed, this rare and highly equipped 1961 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible is ready to collect and enjoy.
