The first product of the war-ravaged Vokswagenwerk factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, the curious little Volkswagen Type 1 soon assumed worldwide popularity as the Beetle. A true People's Car in the tradition of Henry Ford's Model T, the Beetle was relentlessly updated and upgraded throughout its long production run, through 1980 for North America and 2003 in other markets, with over 21.5 million built in all. Soon after imports began around 1949, the Beetle was the best-selling imported car in North America and by June 1960, the 500,000
th Volkswagen had been imported to the United States. Updates reflected the little car's maturity and seemingly endless development, with 1960 models now equipped with a new dished steering wheel, padded sun visor, anti-sway bar, high-output generator, and a steering damper. Volkswagen's famed 1,192cc air-cooled engine delivered 36 factory-rated horsepower via a 4-speed gearbox/rear transaxle.
This charming 1960 Volkswagen Beetle was located in Chesterfield, Virginia for its lifetime until just recently and runs and drives great, in keeping with its outstanding looks. A straight and rust-free example, this highly collectible and enjoyable Beetle remains exceptionally original with one quality repaint applied in 1995 and the engine overhauled in 2022. Earmarks of originality include the factory-correct tar paper to the firewall, all original glass except the windshield, factory hubcaps, factory-correct heater duct hoses, a working original Bendix radio, factory Bilstein box, and factory bumper guards with overriders. Other highlights include a factory oil bath air cleaner, new carburetor, generator and distributor. Proper steel wheels mounting factory hubcaps and 3-inch Whitewall tires finish off this classic air-cooled Beetle very nicely.
