ONE OF THE WOLRDS MOST INFLUENTIAL CARS PRODUCED
Rooted in the rare prewar KdF Wagen peoples car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the Volkswagen Type 1 Sedan, best-known as the Beetle, went on to become a cornerstone of Germanys postwar economic miracle. Championed by British Engineering Corps Major Ivan Hirst out of the ruins of the bomb-ravaged Wolfsburg KdF-Wagen factory and introduced to America in 1949 by Dutch VW importer Ben Pon, the humble little car went on to make Volkswagen a household name worldwide, with some 21 million produced in all from 1946 to 2003. One of the most instantly-recognized and successful automobiles ever produced, the Beetle ranks alongside Henry Fords Model T in terms of popularity and influence among enthusiasts and owners today. By the mid-1950s, careful detail-oriented updates often made in succession throughout each model year made the charming yet curious Beetle even better than before and its reputation for reliability, durability, and quality, all at a very affordable price, cemented the Beetles popularity.
This 1957 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle is a splendid example of these long-running and game-changing vehicles. Finished in factory-correct Jupiter Gray paint with visually striking Blue upholstery, it is the product of a meticulous, nut and bolt restoration and looks fresh and fabulous throughout. A California slide back sunroof provides open-air enjoyment on demand and the driving experience is nicely heightened over that provided by the factory 1,200cc engine with installation of an improved, more-powerful 1,600cc unit, mated to a proper 4-speed manual rear transaxle. Handling is sharpened with installation of front and rear anti-sway bars. A Banjo style steering wheel and correct German-style, square-weave carpeting add further appeal. An additional set keys is included with the sale of this wonderfully presented and very well-equipped 1957 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle, which is equally ready for driving enjoyment or display on the show field.
