For 1953, Studebaker introduced radically redesigned new models with a sleek and decidedly aerodynamic design theme, putting all other makes into the past with their futuristic styling. Recognized today among the most attractive automobile lines ever offered to the public, the new-for-1953 Studebakers were styled under the direction of Robert E. Bourke, head of Studebaker design at the world-famous Raymond Loewy Associates design firm. Offered in sedan form on a 116-inch wheelbase chassis or as a beautifully proportioned coupe on a 120-inch wheelbase, the new Studebakers were an immediate hit. Known as Loewys, the sleek Studebakers were offered as a pillared Starlight coupe and in pillarless Starliner, Champ, or Commander trim. Essentially unchanged for 1954, these innovative Studebakers continued to influence Studebakers styling themes with updates through the eventual cessation of the companys American production at South Bend, Indiana in December 1963. Thanks to their aerodynamic styling, the coupes were soon the choice of customizers and racers seeking world speed-record glory on Utahs world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats.
A fabulous restoration and professional custom build completed under the prior owner, this stunning Loewy coupe is one of just 3,151 examples of the pillared Commander Regal Starlight produced for 1954. Enhancing the cars iconic styling, all handles, ornaments, and emblems were shaved for an ultra-clean look, while the original large grille bars and teeth were removed and replaced with finely crafted stainless-steel spears. Headlamp rims and taillight bezels were painted and classic Blue Dot taillight jewels were added. Power is delivered by a hot period style setup comprising a 1962-vintage small-block 283 CI V-8 engine, equipped with a Tri-Power intake mounting triple Rochester two-barrel carbs. A Chevy Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission provides cruising ease and strong launches on command with a stall-type torque converter, while a great exhaust note comes from the full stainless Flowmaster dual exhaust system terminating with Studebaker Avanti-type exhaust tips.
The interior is fully customized, while maintaining a great classic look, complete with a jet cockpit-styled 1960 Ford Thunderbird center console. Comfort is significantly upgraded with restyled 9-way power-adjustable front bucket seats liberated from a 1993 Pontiac Bonneville. Other tweaks include installation of a 1957 Studebaker President steering wheel, all new instruments, and an upgraded audio system including an AM/FM CD stereo unit, subwoofer, and 500-watt amp, with signals delivered by a frenched-in power antenna. A stunning product of a total professional build with virtually no expense spared, this classic Studebaker is totally captivating and enjoyable on every possible level, including the freshly installed set of Halibrand-style, 17-inch American Racing Salt Flat Gloss Black Kidney Bean wheels.
