Soon after entering service, the ubiquitous military GPW Jeep of WW II fame proved far more capable and  adaptable than its original concept suggested. Consequently, production mostly by Ford and Willys in America reached far greater quantities than the few thousand examples initially contemplated by American military commanders. Following the return of peacetime, Willys based its civilian automobile production on a series of versatile Jeep-based vehicles. Astutely, this decision required minimal retooling and capitalized on the hundreds of thousands of returning military personnel who became fiercely loyal to the Jeep during their service overseas.

Willys two-door Jeepster Phaeton was designed by renowned American industrial designer Brooks Stevens during the war and shared its chassis with the Jeep-based Willys Station Wagon. Even with its Jeep-derived frontal treatment, Jeepster styling was quite sporty with its rakish, cut-down doors inspired by the little roadsters imported from the UK. The Jeepster was introduced on May 3, 1948, initially powered by the F-head, 2.2-liter Hurricane Four. Beginning with the VJ-3 in July 1949, the 72-HP L-head Lightning Six was also available, with overdrive optional. Despite all their winning attributes, the Jeepster was a surprisingly slow seller, with 1948 the most successful model year.

Just 5,844 Jeepsters were produced in all for 1950-51, including this wonderfully presented example from 1950. Restored and handsomely presented throughout, this fun and festive 1950 Willys Jeepster is powered by the Hurricane 2.2-liter engine, derived from the rugged and durable military Jeep powerplant. Formerly located in North Carolina, it looks fabulous and features a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission and desirable overdrive for relaxed touring. The convertible top and boot cover features new fabric and a full-size spare is included. Freshly serviced and detailed, this captivating Jeepster is ready to enjoy and simply put, offers a great classic driving and showing experience with the legendary military Jeep at its heart. Contact us today to experience it in person and get ready to enjoy it as spring and summer driving seasons quickly approach!
