Introduced as a concept car displayed at the 1934 Chicago World's Fair, the Lincoln Zephyr was officially unveiled by company president Edsel B. Ford on November 2, 1935. Bridging the wide gap between the Ford model lines and grand, top-of-the-line coach built Lincolns, the Zephyr was beautifully styled by former yacht designer E.T. Bob Gregorie and remains an Art Deco-inspired design masterpiece. The only car in its class with V-12 power, the Zephyr offered a smooth ride with all occupants comfortably seated within the car's wheelbase.
First offered only as a 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe-sedan, the Zephyr line included a full town limousine and six-passenger coupe by 1937, followed by a convertible sedan and dashing convertible coupe from 1938. Careful refinements typified Zephyr production, including quieter running with hydraulic valve lifters in 1938. Hydraulic brakes and beautifully updated body styling came for 1939. Select updates for 1940 included better vision with more glass area, sealed-beam headlamps, a new one-piece rear window, and elimination of old-fashioned running boards delivered an even more modern look than before.
One of only 1,263 2-door Zephyr coupes produced for 1940, this example continues to benefit from a concours-level restoration completed during 2009. Following completion, it earned multiple accolades including a score of 93.5/100 points under New York Lincoln-Zephyr Owner's Club judging in 2009. Both Junior and Senior status were earned from the Lincoln-Zephyr Owner's Club in 2011 and lastly, the car earned First Place honors with the Lincoln Continental Owner's Club in 2013. Predictably, this sleek Lincoln-Zephyr also served as a featured subject of Continental magazine (Issue no. 254).
Retaining the original 292 CI V-12 engine, factory-rated at 120 horsepower, this collector-grade Lincoln-Zephyr also retains its original 3-speed manual transmission and features an accurately restored engine bay. As offered, the Zephyr features a period correct Black lacquer paint finish showing a moderate patina and a restored Tan interior using correctly striped cloth material. And a matching headliner, door panels, and carpets. Other highlights include a rare optional Zephyr in-dah radio, the original 6-volt electrical system, proper chrome and stainless brightwork, and a spare wheel/tire, roadside jack, and tool set.
