LaSalle, Cadillac?s "junior" companion marque, debuted to critical acclaim in March 1927 with masterful styling by Harley Earl, who established the first design studios at General Motors. A big factor in LaSalle's success was its incredible value, delivering Cadillac quality at a lower price. By the late 1930s, though, LaSalle's days were numbered, with less need for lower-priced companion lines as many competitors to GM?s various automotive divisions were no longer in business. For 1939, the penultimate LaSalle model year, the styling was handsomely updated with a narrow, upright radiator grille flanked by flowing grille elements to each front-fender catwalk. Eight body styles were offered for '39, helping sales of the stylish, yet sensible LaSalle lineup outsell the previous year?s models by over 50 percent.
Sporting a well-preserved restoration, this handsome 1939 LaSalle Series 50 Convertible Coupe carries Fisher body style 39-5067. It looks great in its glossy Black paint finish, complemented by the matching convertible top, which is smartly piped Red. The interior compartment features Red upholstery and a wood grain painted dash finish. Power is delivered by a LaSalle-specific, 322 CI L-head V-8 engine rated at 125 BHP, paired with a synchromesh 3-speed manual transmission. Desirable features and accessories include a pair of occasional (jump) seats to the rear, plus an under-dash, Cadillac-scripted heater.
